Kichu monastery is Bhutan’s one of the oldest temple built in 7th century by the Tibetan King Songsten Gampo. In order to subdue the demoness, spread over the Himalayas and Tibet who was preventing the spread of Buddhism, the monastery was built.
The structure of the temple was small at the early time of its establishment but over the time it was expanded in size after the visit by many famous Buddhist saints including Guru Rinpoche in the 8th century. Under the initiative of the Royal Queen Mother Ashi Kezang Choden Wangchuk, a new structure known as Guru Lhakhang was added in 1965.
The two orange trees in Kichu monastery is believed to bear the fruit throughout the year irrespective of seasons. It is believed that the blessings and energy is tremendous as the great MahaSiddha Guru Rinpoche Padmasambhava, planted a cypress tree in the compound of this temple with the aspiration to propagate the Buddha-Dharma in Bhutan for the benefit of all sentient beings.
