The literal name of Membartsho is ‘the burning Lake’ and it is situated beautifully on Tang valley an asupecious site on the Tang Chhu (river). This lake is believed to be one of the auspicious pilgrimage sites of Bhutan as Pema Linpa (Tibetan master) discovered several hidden religious treasures of Guru Rinpoche’s (Tibetan master) from within this pool in 16th century. Only some of the treasures were recovered diving deep in the lake with a lit butter lamp. The lamp was still burning when Pema Linpa(Tibetan master) returned from the lake. The name originated with this fact of burning lamp.
This site is mostly filled with colorful Prayer flags and small clay offerings called ‘Tsa Tsa’ in the rocks slots.
