This huge Tibetan-style chorten was built in 1974 as a memorial to the third king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck (1928–72) and dedication to world peace. This iconic monument is located close to the center of Thimphu city. It is one of the mostly worshipped religious structures in Thimphu. The elderly people visit their early in the morning and some of the school going children visit this place to pay homage as it falls on the way to the school. There is a butter lamp hall, a long room where the burning containers of oil lamps are kept. You need to pay INR 10/- per lamp in order to light it as per your hearty wish.
The chorten is decorated with sun-catching golden finial featuring the mandalas, statues and a shrine dedicated to the popular king. The Buddhists believe that such monuments have the ‘Mind of Buddha’ and it literally means “seat of faith”.
