Bumthang is blessed with extensive number of monasteries and holy sites. Out of them, Tamshing monastery is highly remarkable for its beauty and links to Bhutanese saints, religious master and the sacred treasure hunters. This monastery was built in 1501 by Pema Lingpa (Tibetan master). It is situated in Choekhor Gewog which is about five kilometers from Chamkhar town.
The statue of Guru Rinpoche (Tibetan master) in the monastery is considered to be the main wealth which is believed to be built by Dakinis and inner relic of the statue is said to be discovered from different sites by Pema Lingpa (Tibetan master).
This site is daily worshipped by the local communities and thousands of visitors and tourists visit for spiritual pilgrimage. The oldest wall paintings of Bhutan are well preserved in this site and Pema Lingpa (Tibetan master) blessed this site with his prayers.
The annual tsechu (festivals) are held where sacred peling dances (mask dances) are being performed. Phalachoedpa is held at its courtyard for three days during the 8th month of the Bhutanese calendar.
