The ‘Weekend Market’ in Thimphu is located north of Changlimithang Stadium in the west bank of Wang Chhu. The large number of vendors from various region start arriving on Thursday and sell their product from Friday till Sunday. It is one of the largest domestic market for the farmers in Bhutan. The availability of fresh and organic products has not only attracted the local buyers but even the tourists and other foreigners working here are also interested to visit at least once a week there.
Nearby the weekend market, there are collection of many small stalls selling textiles, handicrafts and clothing items which is just across a cantilever footbridge.
The incense area is full of aromatic fresh ingredients and rosy chops of camphor and saffron that are used to flavour the holy water given to pilgrims in lhakhangs. Under the vegetable market, you’ll find collection of dried fish, pork, discs of soft cheese, bottles of wild organic honey from southern Bhutan and many more. In winter days, plenty of yak meat is available. The seasonal vegetables and fruits like curly fern fronds known as nakey, banana pods, and jackfruit are available in their respective seasons. The red rice, kapche and the ground roasted barley are available in the cereals section.
